Piezoelectric Charge Constant (d33) Testers
The piezoelectric charge constant, d, is the mechanical
strain experienced by a piezoelectric element per unit of
electrical energy applied, or, alternatively, is the electrical
energy generated by the element per unit of mechanical stress
applied. Defects in a ceramic, due to incorrect composition,
processing inconsistencies, or other problems, are reflected by
a low d33 value. Consequently, a fast, easy means of
determining d33 is invaluable for ensuring quality
and consistency among piezoelectric ceramic components.
We offer two reliable, easy-to-use d33 testing
apparatus. The Model 8000 d33 tester is a low
cost / low maintenance unit that offers fast, accurate, direct
readout of d33 values from 0 to ±1200 x 10-12
m/V. No technical expertise is needed -- the unit is easy to
learn to use and easy to operate. The Model 8000 unit
accommodates ceramic elements of varied size and shape, and
allows fast testing of multiple units. The only additional
equipment needed, a digital AC voltmeter (millivolt
sensitivity), and a coaxial cable with BNC connectors (to
connect the voltmeter to the d33 meter) are readily
available from APCI or other sources. To ascertain polarity of
ceramic elements, connect the Model 8000 d33 tester
to an oscilloscope. Power requirements: 120 VAC / 60 Hz.
Our wide-range d33 tester is capable of
measuring d33 values from 1 - 200 pC/N or 10 - 2000
pC/N, at high resolution, with a high degree of reliability.
The wide-range d33 tester accommodates elements of varied size and shape, and displays
readouts directly. No additional equipment is needed to operate
the wide-range unit, either for obtaining d33 values
or polarity. Power requirements: 110/220 VAC / 50/60 Hz.
Either of these models offers a fast, easy, reliable way to
ensure the quality of incoming components and/or optimize and
monitor production processes.

This d33 tester will enable you to measure d33
values over a very wide range, at high resolution, and with a
high degree of reliability. Like the Model 8000 d33
tester, the wide-range unit accommodates elements of varied size
and shape, and displays readouts directly. For single crystals
of lithium niobate, quartz, tourmaline, etc., d33
values can be measured in various directions. No additional
equipment is needed to operate the wide-range unit, either for
obtaining d33 values or determining polarity.
Polarity is indicated as part of the readout: a (-) sign
indicates the upper face of the element in the tester is
negative, no sign indicates the upper face is positive. The unit
is compatible with either 110 VAC or 220 VAC power.
