COMPOSITE MATERIALS
APC International, Ltd. offers a range of options in the area of custom piezocomposite materials. These materials can be an excellent choice when standard piezoelectric ceramic materials do not suit an application. Composites are a combination of an active material such as piezoelectric ceramics and a passive material such as a polymer or epoxy. One basic relationship between the active and passive material is commonly referred to as connectivity. Connectivity is a convenient notation for illustrating the number of dimensions through which a material is continuous. Connectivity of a piezoelectric composite is shown as a combination of two numbers such as 1-3, 2-2 or 0-3 where the first digit represents the active material and the second digit represents the passive material. APC composites are 1-3 composites, which means that the piezoelectric material is continuous in one direction. The connectivity relationship is the origin of some of the benefits of these composites.
How do APC 1-3 composites differ from APC bulk Piezo Parts?
- Lower acoustic impedance between 8MRayl and 26MRayl
- Highler coupling coefficient
- Typically 0.63 to 0.70 compared with 0.54 of bulk material
- Higher bandwidth and lower Qm
- Review the composite type pages for additional benefits
Common Applications For 1-3 Composites
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) ultrasound transducers
- SONAR, single element
- Flow control
- Ultrasonic air transducers
- SONAR, phased arrays
- Medical ultrasound transducers
