An ultrasonic transducer is a device that is capable of converting sound waves into electrical impulses, or the other way around. Different types of transducers perform this job differently:

  • Transducers called transmitters convert energy into ultrasound.
  • Receivers convert ultrasound into electrical energy.
  • Transceivers convert signals both ways.

Because of a piezoelectric material's ability to generate voltage when it's exposed to mechanical force, it makes an ideal transducer component. Air transducers, which transmit and receive signals through the air, find use in a wide range of applications. Learn more about these innovative devices below.

How Piezo Ultrasonic Transducers Work

Generally used to measure or sense objects, piezo air transducers work by transmitting an ultrasound signal, waiting for it to bounce off of a present object and receiving it again. The received sound is converted to an electrical signal, which is then used to calculate the object's distance from the sensor.

People may use a single ultrasonic transducer to sense the distance of an object. A system of transducers can be used to sense an object's movement or speed, such as in measuring wind speed or water flow rate. The accuracy and range of the transducer will rely on the signal's bandwidth and frequency. The higher the sound frequency, the more accurately the transducer will measure at short distances.

What Ultrasonic Transducers Are Used For

Piezo air transducers have many applications. Because ultrasonic transducers transmit sound that is outside of the range of human hearing, they're convenient to use in everyday situations and often go unnoticed. Even so, these devices have a big impact in a variety of industries.

Common ultrasonic transducer applications include:

  • Car parking sensors
  • Motion detectors
  • Intruder alarms
  • Measuring devices
  • Ultrasound probes, for use in medicine
  • Level detectors, such as in silos

Piezo air transducers are popular in part due to their ability to function when photoelectric sensors cannot. Since they use sound instead of light, these transducers can still work in dark spaces or even underwater. With the right combination of bandwidth, frequency and power output, you can use a piezo air transducer to solve many unique challenges.

Piezo Air Transducers From APC International

At APC International, we supply clients around the world with the ultrasonic air transducers they need to innovate and thrive within their industries. Using piezoelectric ceramics, we design and manufacture ultrasonic air transducers in different frequencies and bandwidths. Our standard options come in aluminum or plastic housing and feature high sensitivity and sound pressure levels.

To ensure our customers receive piezo devices that meet their high expectations, we operate in accordance with ISO 9001 standards and manufacture to tight tolerances. If you don't see the type of transducers you're looking for on our website, we also offer custom design and consulting services, so you can find a model that meets your needs within a short time frame.
