Piezoelectric Transducers Unlock New Doors

According to Innovation News Daily, AT&T Labs has developed a system using piezoelectric transducers that allows a person to unlock a door just by touching the door’s handle. The system, developed by AT&T Labs, requires two piezoelectric transducers. Piezoelectric transducers convert electrical energy into vibrational mechanical energy.  Additionally, because the piezoelectric effect is reversible, a transducer can also convert vibrational mechanical energy back into an electrical signal.

How The Transducer Process Works

In the AT&T Labs system, one transducer is carried on the person opening the door (perhaps embedded in a smartphone) and the other transducer is installed in the door handle.  The transducer carried on the person generates an acoustic signal that travels through the body and is transferred to anything the person touches, including the door handle with the installed piezoelectric transducer.  The piezo transducer in door handle converts the acoustic signal back into an electrical signal that is then interpreted by lock’s computer system.  If the signal matches, the door opens.  If the signal does not match, the door remains securely locked.

Imagine a world in which you no longer need any keys! Just don’t forget your cell phone!
