Transmitting Ultrasonic Signals in Water and In-House Services Offered from APC

How Piezoelectricity Works With Ultrasonic Signals

In a typical echo sounding application a single electronically switched piezoelectric transducer operates in both the transmitting and receiving modes. To locate an object in water, the transducer is used to transmit a short pulse of ultrasound in the direction of an object. The signal is then reflected by that object and is picked up by the transducer, which is then acts as the receiver.

The type of transducer is designed based on the application and signal frequency it requires. Common applications and frequencies used include:
– Few hertz – 1 kHz — ocean acoustics
– Between 1 kHz – 100 kHz — strategic (weapon/detection) sonar
– Between 50 kHz – 1 MHz — fish finding & mine detecting devices
– 1 MHz – gigahertz — medical ultrasound imaging

In nautical applications of echo sounders, at distances of less than 10 m, echo intensity depends almost exclusively on distance and the reflection coefficient of the target object. For greater distances, signal absorption by the water also must be considered. For a 200 kHz signal, absorption is approximately 0.06 dB/m.

For nautical applications APC recommends the use of our 840 and 841 piezo materials. Consider APC 850 and APC 855 piezo materials for medical ultrasound applications.

Let APC Help Save Your Company Costs, Time and Effort!

While piezoelectric components bring a wealth of features and benefits to a wide variety of products in the market today – working with piezoelectric elements can be challenging and problematic for manufacturers that do not have the necessary specialized knowledge to manage the learning curve involved. In addition, the ups and downs of the current economic climate make planning and scaling up operations a very unpredictable endeavor. Let APC International be your in-house specialist. Control your costs, quality and budget.

Why use APC International’s Services? Because you want to:
– Eliminate in-house expenses
– Receive ready to use parts
– Reduce losses related to rejected parts
